Part 2 of 3: The Iodine Series
Your thyroid is the brain of your endocrine system. It regulates your hormones, your energy levels, your metabolism, and many of your body’s most important functions. [1] And this small gland in your neck depends entirely on one nutrient to do all of that: iodine.
I saw it in my practice constantly. People came to me exhausted, gaining weight, dealing with mood changes, brain fog, and hormonal imbalances. And nobody has explained to them why. They keep walking out of doctor’s offices with a bag full of prescriptions or supplements, and nobody is addressing the root cause of what is going on.
Here is what I have learned over more than three decades of clinical work: your endocrine system is designed to self-regulate beautifully. Your thyroid communicates with your brain, your adrenals, your reproductive organs, all through an elegant feedback system. [2] When you provide the raw materials, everything works. When iodine is missing, that whole system starts breaking down. And the good news is, your body already knows how to heal. You just need to give it what it needs.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- Your thyroid uses iodine to produce T3 and T4 hormones. Every single cell in your body depends on these hormones for energy, mood regulation, metabolism, and cognitive function. [1,2]
- Iodine deficiency creates a cascade of endocrine system malfunctions, including thyroid dysfunction, cortisol imbalance, adrenal fatigue, and hormonal disruption. [3]
- The ovaries hold the second highest concentration of iodine in the body after the thyroid. This makes iodine essential for women’s reproductive health, hormonal balance, and fertility. [4,5]
WHAT I HAVE DISCOVERED: One of the most powerful things I have ever learned in my clinical career is that deficiencies are actually caused by toxicities. When the body is burdened with toxins, it cannot absorb or utilize the nutrients it needs, including iodine. Your thyroid requires iodine to make the hormones that power every cell. When that supply is compromised, you feel it everywhere: your energy, your weight, your mood, and your hormones. The free 6 Secrets to Total Body Detox course walks you through how to support your body’s natural ability to restore itself.
HOW YOUR BODY IS DESIGNED TO HEAL
Your thyroid is a self-regulating masterpiece. Your brain sends a signal to your thyroid telling it how much hormone to produce. Your thyroid then takes iodine from your blood and creates two hormones: T3 and T4. T3 has three molecules of iodine. T4 has four. [1] Every cell in your body uses these hormones to produce energy. That is how fundamental iodine is to your existence.
Now, about 90% of what your thyroid produces is T4, which is the inactive form. [2] Your body then converts T4 into the active T3 in your liver, your kidneys, and other tissues. And here is where selenium comes in. Selenium is what helps your body make that conversion. It also protects your thyroid from oxidative stress. [6] This is exactly why I always recommend supporting the body with iodine and selenium together as they are a team.
When this system has what it needs, your body operates the way it was designed:
- Steady, consistent energy from morning to evening
- Clear thinking and sharp mental focus
- Balanced mood and emotional stability
- Healthy metabolism and weight maintenance
- Strong immune function
- Vibrant skin, hair, and nails
Your body knows how to do all of this. It just needs clean building blocks.
THE HIDDEN ROOT CAUSE
The Thyroid-Adrenal Connection
This is something I am very passionate about because I see it every single day. The cortisol levels, the endocrine system malfunctions that people deal with from iodine deficiency, especially when combined with selenium deficiency, are a big, big thing when it comes to thyroid and adrenal fatigue. [3]
When your thyroid is underperforming because it lacks iodine, your adrenals pick up the slack. Your adrenal glands start pumping out more cortisol, your stress hormone, to compensate. [7] Over time, this puts enormous strain on your adrenals. You feel wired and tired at the same time. Your sleep suffers, your anxiety increases, your blood sugar becomes harder to regulate. And it all traces back to one missing element: iodine.
Why Women Are Especially Affected
This is critically important for women to understand. After the thyroid, the ovaries contain the second highest concentration of iodine in the body. [5] When iodine is deficient in the thyroid, it is almost certain that the ovaries are also deficient and struggling.
I have seen in my clinical experience that iodine deficiency contributes to:
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): Iodine deficiency is a risk factor for developing cysts in the ovaries, which can affect hormone balance and fertility. [4,8]
- Breast tissue concerns: Like thyroid tissue, breast tissue absorbs iodine. Breast conditions and iodine deficiency are connected. [4]
- Reduced fertility: Moderate iodine deficiencies may reduce a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant. Severe deficiencies may lead to miscarriage. [4]
- Estrogen dominance: When hormone production is compromised in the ovaries, it can create imbalances that affect the entire reproductive system
This is why I am such a big proponent of iodine supplementation. Every cell needs it and women need it even more than they realize.
SUPPORTING YOUR THYROID AND ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
STEP 1: RECOGNIZE (Listen to Your Body)
Your body sends clear signals when your thyroid is out of balance. Low energy, unexplained weight gain, brain fog, mood changes, dry skin, cold sensitivity, and hair thinning. These are messages. Start paying attention to them as your body is communicating with you.
STEP 2: CLEANSE (Remove What Is Interfering)
This always comes first. All disease is caused by a toxic external environment and a toxic internal environment. Your liver is where T4 gets converted to T3. A congested liver directly impacts your thyroid function. Begin liver detoxification and download the free 2-Day Liver Cleanse PDF to guide you in the detoxification process. Clean the body out first and let the body start regulating itself again. When we retest cleansed patients, their numbers come back to normal on their own. That is the power of removing the interference.
STEP 3: NOURISH (Give Your Thyroid What It Needs)
Once the body is cleaner and able to absorb nutrients properly, iodine becomes the foundation. I recommend nascent iodine because it is a single iodine atom in an energized state, making it highly bioavailable and gentle on your system. Pair it with selenium to support proper conversion of inactive T4 to active T3. Add Vitamin B12 to support your adrenals, red blood cell formation, and energy production. These three nutrients work together.
STEP 4: PROTECT (Guard Your Endocrine System)
Filter your water to remove fluoride, chlorine, and other endocrine disruptors. Reduce exposure to brominated compounds in flame retardants, certain breads, and soft drinks. Choose organic foods. Practice stress management through meditation and deep breathing. Get adequate sleep. These are simple, foundational practices that protect the hormonal balance your body is working to restore.
LIFESTYLE AND PRACTICAL ACTIONS
Immediate Action Steps:
- Support your thyroid daily with clean, bioavailable nascent iodine on an empty stomach with distilled water
- Pair iodine with selenium to protect the thyroid and support T4-to-T3 conversion
- Add Vitamin B12 to support adrenal function and energy production
- Filter your drinking water to remove fluoride, chlorine, and chemical contaminants
- Start reading labels on everything that goes in, on, and around your body
Daily Habits for Sustained Hormonal Balance:
- Morning: Take your iodine supplementation first thing. Practice meditation or deep breathing to support healthy cortisol levels
- Throughout the day: Choose organic, whole foods. Manage stress consistently. Move your body
- Evening: Prioritize 7-9 hours of restful sleep. Your endocrine system recalibrates during deep rest
People usually start seeing dramatic changes within a week to two weeks. I always recommend committing to at least 90 days because everyone’s toxic burden is different. The body responds to consistency.
