Part 3 of 3: The Iodine Series

Your body needs only one halogen to thrive, and that halogen is iodine. But the modern world is flooding your system with three others — fluorine, chlorine, and bromine — and these three toxic halogens compete directly with iodine for the same receptor sites on your thyroid and in your cells. [1,2] This is one of the most important things I teach, and it is something that almost nobody is talking about.

I have spent more than three decades studying what blocks the body from healing. And one of the biggest discoveries in my clinical career is this: it is not just that people are iodine deficient. It is that their bodies are loaded with toxic halogens that are actively displacing the iodine they do have. You can take all the iodine in the world, but if your body is saturated with fluoride, bromide, and chlorine, that iodine has nowhere to go. If the receptor sites are already occupied. that is a big, big problem.

I saw this over and over in my practice. People came to me with all the classic signs of iodine deficiency,  the fatigue, the brain fog, the weight gain, the hormonal imbalances,  and they had already tried supplementing. They had already tried changing their diet. And they were still not getting better. Nobody had ever explained to them that the issue was not just about getting more iodine in. The issue was about getting the toxic halogens out. That is the missing piece that most practitioners never address.

Your body already knows the answer. When you give it clean iodine and remove the toxic interference, your body does what it was always designed to do. It heals.

HOW YOUR BODY IS DESIGNED TO HEAL

To understand why toxic halogens are such a problem, you first need to understand how your thyroid captures iodine, and this is fascinating.

Your thyroid contains a specialized transport mechanism called the sodium-iodide symporter, or NIS. [7] Think of NIS as a gateway. Its entire job is to pull iodide from your bloodstream into your thyroid cells, where it is then used to create the T3 and T4 hormones that every single cell in your body depends on for energy.

When this system is working properly and iodine is abundant, your thyroid concentrates iodine at levels 20 to 50 times higher than what is found in your blood. [7] Think about that. Twenty to fifty times higher. That is how critical iodine is to your thyroid. That is how aggressively your thyroid seeks it out and holds onto it.

Now here is where the problem begins. Fluorine, chlorine, and bromine are in the same chemical family as iodine on the periodic table. [1] They share similar properties, and because of this, your body can mistake them for iodine. When these toxic halogens are circulating in high concentrations in your system, they interfere with your thyroid’s ability to concentrate the iodine it needs. [2,5] The result is a thyroid that is starving for its essential building block, even when you think you are getting enough iodine. And that is when everything starts to break down.

When iodine is present in sufficient amounts and the toxic burden is addressed, this system recalibrates beautifully:

  • Your thyroid receptor sites are occupied by the one halogen they were designed for
  • Your T3 and T4 production normalizes
  • Your energy, metabolism, and mental clarity are restored
  • Your endocrine system communicates clearly again
  • Your immune system strengthens
  • Your skin, hair, and nails regain their natural vitality

This is your body’s intelligent design at work. It simply needs the interference removed and the right raw material restored.

THE HIDDEN ROOT CAUSE

Fluoride: In Your Water and Your Toothpaste

This is a big one. Fluoride is everywhere, it is added to most municipal water supplies in the United States. It is in conventional toothpaste, dental treatments, mouthwash, and even in some medications. [3] And here is what most people do not know: fluoride was once actually used as a medication to reduce thyroid activity in patients with overactive thyroids. And it worked at doses as low as 2 milligrams per day. [8] Let that sink in. A substance that is deliberately added to public drinking water was historically used as a drug to suppress thyroid function.

Research has shown that fluoride may influence thyroid function by inhibiting the sodium-iodide symporter, the very gateway your thyroid depends on to capture iodine from your blood. [5,9] When that gateway is compromised, your thyroid cannot concentrate the iodine it needs. And the cascade from there is predictable: lower thyroid hormone production, slower metabolism, fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, and hormonal imbalance. It all connects.

This is why I tell everyone: filtering your water is not optional. It is foundational. If you are drinking fluoridated water every single day, you are delivering a thyroid-suppressing compound directly into your system with every glass, every single glass.

Chlorine: In Every Glass and Every Shower

Chlorine is used to disinfect public water supplies across the country. And while its role in sanitation is acknowledged, the consequence is that most people are bathing in it and drinking it every single day. [4] Your skin is your largest organ. When you shower in chlorinated water, your body absorbs that chlorine right through your skin. When you drink unfiltered tap water, you are ingesting it directly.

Here is the research that matters. Chlorine-containing compounds like perchlorate are well-documented competitive inhibitors of the sodium-iodide symporter. [10] Perchlorate has been found in public drinking water systems, in food crops, and in commercial dairy products. [10] Research confirms that perchlorate disrupts thyroid function by competing with iodide for uptake by the thyroid gland, and the result is reduced thyroid hormone production. [10] And here is the critical part: studies indicate that low iodine intake increases your vulnerability to these effects. [10] So if you are already iodine deficient and you are drinking chlorinated water, you are compounding the problem.

I have been saying this for decades: clean water is not a luxury. It is a requirement for healing. Period.

Bromine: Hidden in Your Home and Your Food

Bromine is the toxic halogen that most people have never even heard of. And it may be the most insidious of them all. Brominated compounds are found in flame retardants used in your furniture, your mattresses, your carpets, your electronics, and your clothing. [4,11] Brominated vegetable oil has been used in certain citrus-flavored soft drinks. Potassium bromate has been added to flour in commercial baked goods. [4] It is everywhere.

Brominated flame retardants are persistent in the environment. They do not break down and they bioaccumulate. They have been classified as endocrine disruptors. [11,12] Research has associated exposure to these compounds with disruption of thyroid hormone regulation, reproductive effects, and neurodevelopmental impacts, particularly in children. [11,12] These compounds build up in your tissues year after year, adding to your toxic burden every single day.

And here is what concerns me most. Young children are especially vulnerable because of their frequent contact with floors and surfaces where contaminated dust gathers, combined with hand-to-mouth activity. [12] Pregnant women face additional risk because thyroid hormones are essential for healthy fetal development. [12] We are talking about the most vulnerable populations being the most exposed.

This is exactly why I teach that healing must start with removing the toxic interference. You cannot supplement your way out of a toxic environment. You have to clean the body out first. That must always come first.

The Halogen Displacement Principle

Now this is one of the most empowering things you can learn. The halogens, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine, follow a principle in chemistry: a lighter, more reactive halogen can displace a heavier one. [1] Fluorine is the lightest and most reactive. Iodine is the heaviest. This means fluorine, chlorine, and bromine can all potentially displace iodine in your body. And that is exactly what is happening to millions of people right now.

But here is the good news. And this is what I love about the body’s design, when you flood the body with clean, bioavailable iodine while simultaneously reducing your exposure to these toxic halogens, your body begins to restore balance. The research shows that iodine supplementation can support the urinary excretion of fluoride and bromide, helping the body clear these toxic competitors. [6] Your body wants to heal, it wants iodine in those receptor sites. You just need to give it enough iodine and remove enough interference for that process to happen.

This is exactly why detoxification and iodine supplementation go hand in hand. You cannot do one without the other and expect optimal results. They are a team.

Why Women Face Even Greater Risk

This is something I am passionate about and I covered it in depth in Part 2 of this series of this series. The ovaries hold the second highest concentration of iodine in the body after the thyroid. [13] That means toxic halogens are not just a thyroid issue for women. They are a reproductive health issue. When fluoride, chlorine, and bromine are occupying receptor sites throughout the body, the ovaries are affected right alongside the thyroid. Hormonal balance, fertility, breast tissue health,  all of it depends on adequate iodine reaching the tissues that need it most. Removing toxic halogen interference is essential for women’s health at every single stage of life.

RESTORING YOUR BODY’S NATURAL HALOGEN DEFENSE

STEP 1: RECOGNIZE (Identify the Sources of Toxic Halogen Exposure)

Start by auditing your environment. You have to become aware of what is going in, on, and around your body. Awareness is always the first step to elimination.

  • Fluoride: Is your drinking water fluoridated? What toothpaste are you using? Are you exposed through dental treatments or medications?
  • Chlorine: Are you showering in unfiltered water? Are you drinking unfiltered tap water?
  • Bromine: What furniture, mattresses, and clothing surround you? What processed foods and beverages are you consuming? Are there brominated compounds in your home?

STEP 2: ELIMINATE (Remove Toxic Halogen Sources)

This is where real change happens. And this always comes first.

  • Filter your drinking water with a system that removes fluoride, chlorine, and chemical contaminants
  • Install a shower filter to reduce chlorine exposure through your skin
  • Switch to a fluoride-free toothpaste
  • Read every single food label and eliminate products containing brominated compounds, potassium bromate, and brominated vegetable oil

People usually start seeing dramatic changes within one to four weeks. Improved energy, clearer thinking, better mood, more stable weight.
